Crawl spaces are uninsulated and have a limited height, which means it is not possible to walk into them. As a rule, the ceilings of crawl spaces (i.e. the ground floor ceilings) are not insulated; heat loss is high and the floor feels uncomfortably cold.
One possible method of insulating crawl spaces is to spray polyurethane foam beneath the ceiling. This method is widely used in the Netherlands but is hardly known in Germany.
First, the crawl space is thoroughly prepared by carrying out any necessary repairs to the masonry and foundations. ,
The polyurethane spray insulation is then applied directly to the masonry and sprayed from below under the ground floor. A minimum insulation thickness of 100 mm to 150 mm should be achieved. The spray application method ensures seamless insulation.
The work takes one day and does not affect the use of the property, as it is carried out from below.
The ground floor is now adequately insulated.
A minimum thickness of 100 mm is recommended, although thicker insulation may also be used.
All the benefits at a glance
Lower heating costs: As a rule, well-executed PU spray insulation in the crawl space can lead to heating cost savings of 50–70 per cent, based on the ‘floor’ component, and potentially even more.
Further benefits:
- Protection against damp and mould.
- Improved indoor climate and comfort: warm floors
- Reduced external noise.
- A sustainable and environmentally friendly solution.
- Increased property value.
- Long-term cost savings through reduced heating bills.
Financial support: This measure is eligible for a 15 per cent (BEG) or 20 per cent (tax relief) grant if a minimum U-value of 0.25 W/m²K is achieved. This is achieved with an insulation thickness of 11 cm.
Can I install the insulation myself? Applying spray polyurethane (PU) insulation in a crawl space requires specialist knowledge and equipment. It is recommended that you have this work carried out by a professional specialist contractor to ensure safe and efficient insulation. The contractor carrying out the work should hold a QM qualification.
