WLS 007 vacuum plates

Eigenschaften

Vacuum insulation panels were initially used to good effect in the manufacture of refrigerators; they have also been available as a building product with the relevant approvals for more than 20 years. They are always a sensible choice when high levels of insulation need to be achieved in a confined space. The panels can withstand pressure, but their foil casing must not be damaged on site, as this is what maintains the vacuum.

Areas of application include: insulation on the ground floor slabs above the cellar, insulation of concrete balconies (from above), internal insulation, insulation of parapet panels and, in special cases, flat roof insulation. The boards must be ordered according to precise measurements. Drilling or nailing into the boards during their service life is strictly prohibited; this is of particular importance for their use in buildings not occupied by the owner.

Composite insulation materials are available for various applications. When bonded to polystyrene, the insulation boards can be plastered and are suitable for internal and ceiling insulation; when bonded to a medium-density softwood fibreboard, the boards are suitable for under-rafter insulation. When bonded to a polyester fibre board, the panels can be used for terrace and floor insulation.

Rohstoffe und Herstellungsverfahren

Raw materials: silicon tetrachloride, infrared opacifier, cellulose fibres, polyethylene film, multi-layer wrapping film (aluminium, plastic)

Pyrogenic silica is produced at high temperatures (1200°C) from silicon tetrachloride. The individual primary particles initially formed fuse together in the flame to form agglomerates. The silica is then mixed with an infrared-absorbing component and fibre filaments. In the next step, the mixture is pressed into a base plate, from which the required panel sizes are cut. The mixture can also be cast directly into the required panel sizes. Depending on the storage period, the support panels must be dried in a continuous-flow oven before further processing. The support plate is then shrink-wrapped in polyethylene film and inserted into pre-made three-sided sealed bags (made of aluminium or metallised plastic layers). Finally, the air is evacuated in special chambers. During this process, the side of the bag that has remained open until the end is also sealed to be vacuum-tight.

Entsorgung und Recycling

The panels are usually taken back by the manufacturer after use. The support material (pyrogenic silica) is fully recyclable. The material can be reintroduced into the manufacturing process for new panels or, once crushed, used in road construction or civil engineering projects.

Gesundheit und Ökologie

The manufacture of vacuum insulation panels requires a relatively high amount of energy. There are no known concerns regarding the individual components. From a health perspective, there are no known adverse effects. Only in the event of a fire may formaldehyde be released from the polyethylene film used.
