SLS blow-in insulation WLS 040

Eigenschaften

In addition to its thermal insulation properties, this insulation material also has sound-insulating properties. It is a mineral-based material with the corresponding characteristics. SLS 20 is non-combustible and resistant to rot and pests. Due to its hydrophobic properties, it can be used as a core insulation material. Thanks to its very fine grain size, the granulate can be used even in very narrow cavities, and only small drill holes are required.

Due to its free-flowing nature, it is also suitable for insulating curtain wall facades; indeed, SLS can be used for insulating high-rise buildings, not least because it is non-combustible. However, due to its excellent flowability, it may also seep through; appropriate precautions should therefore be taken.

Owing to its non-combustibility, the product can also be used to insulate heat pipes.

Rohstoffe und Herstellungsverfahren

Raw materials: lime-soda-silicate glass, recycled glass, glass dust

. Production: the materials are mixed, liquefied and processed into a glass block. This is coarsely crushed and then finely ground. The ground powder is heated to a very high temperature using infrared lamps; this causes the crystalline water to expand explosively, transforming the powder into insulating granules. The finished product is then treated with silicone oil to make it water-repellent. The expansion process is similar to that used to make popcorn (from maize kernels).

Zulassungen und Regelungen

Z-23.12-1399 (expired at the end of 2023; extension requested)

Legal provisions:

Blown-in insulation is only considered insulation within the meaning of building regulations if it has been installed by specialist contractors who have been trained in its use by the relevant manufacturer and are included on a list. If installed by a DIY enthusiast themselves, the material will provide insulation but is not legally classified as insulation. In the event of damage (e.g. fire), this could lead to problems with insurance companies. Furthermore, any subsidies are forfeited for structures in which self-installed blow-in insulation has been used. Even in the case of ‘KfW-x buildings’ or new builds, these insulation materials must not be included in the calculations made by energy consultants or architects.

Gesundheit und Ökologie

There are no known health concerns. As the material produces dust during processing, respiratory protection must be worn. From an environmental perspective, the product’s use of recycled glass and the short transport distances for raw materials are positive factors; however, the high energy consumption during production is a negative aspect.

Vorteile
  • moderate thermal conductivity
  • non-combustible
  • requires only a few small drill holes
  • water-repellent (suitable for core insulation)
  • Use of recycled glass as a raw material
Nachteile
  • Risk of seepage
  • High primary energy content
  • Due to its average thermal insulation value of 0.040 W/mK, this product is not eligible for subsidies for core insulation (neither BAFA nor tax relief)
