Eigenschaften
Calcium silicate boards have only moderate thermal insulation properties, but their other characteristics make them an attractive option. These include their high pH value, which prevents the growth of mould. Furthermore, they are capillary-active, meaning they can absorb and release large amounts of water, thus acting as a buffer in terms of moisture balance.
Owing to their ability to regulate internal condensation and the indoor climate, as well as their suitability for mould remediation and prevention, calcium silicate boards occupy a special place in the field of internal insulation. They are therefore used for the internal insulation of external masonry and half-timbered walls, as well as for internal window reveals and radiator recesses. Thanks to their non-combustible properties, they are also used for technical insulation in high-temperature applications. The boards are cut using a hand saw and fixed in place using a special mortar.
Rohstoffe und Herstellungsverfahren
Raw materials: hydrated lime, sand, silicic acid, fly ash, silicate aggregates, cellulose
The raw materials are mixed with water and poured into moulds. A reaction with aluminium results in the release of gaseous hydrogen, which in turn leads to the formation of pores. After being pressed, the semi-solid blocks are cut and cured in autoclaves. This process results in the formation of calcium silicates.

In the case of non-selective demolition, reuse is possible in some instances. Furthermore, the panels can be crushed and used as waste lime for agricultural purposes. In some cases, crushed panels may also be used as loose-fill insulation in high-temperature applications. If none of the reuse or recycling options are feasible, the product can be disposed of at a construction waste tip.

Gesundheit und Ökologie
Calcium silicate boards pose no health risks; however, dust may be generated during installation, although this is not known to have any adverse health effects.
From an environmental perspective, however, the high energy consumption involved in their manufacture is a negative factor. The good availability of raw materials and short transport distances are advantages of this insulation material.
- Good availability of raw materials, short transport distances
- Extensive experience with the insulation material, readily available
- non-combustible (A1)
- moisture-regulating / improves the indoor climate
- Anti-mould boards
- High energy consumption during manufacture
- not compostable; limited recyclability or reusability
- only moderate insulating properties
- Relatively expensive as an insulating material – but the most cost-effective and effective anti-mould system
